- Process Reviews - KAI conducts organizational assessments and program audits of funded research.
These activities identify performance issues in the Institutes' research programs. In the assessment process,
KAI reviews the procedures, study organization and communication links, study progress, data management operations,
quality control mechanisms, and utilization of resources and make recommendations to senior Government staff regarding
identified issues. The process reviews identifies areas that require training or guidelines and ultimately improves
the processes and productivity of NIH scientists. They also identify problem areas that require continued review to
improve performance.
- Audits - KAI audits study data and software and validates statistical tables and analyses.
KAI compares data in computer data bases to medical records and other source documents at academic centers of
excellence funded by NIH to assure accuracy. We also review the reports produced from the data to assure that
the reports and computer programs used to analyze the data reflect the data accurately.
- Guidelines and Checklists - To assist NIH scientists and scientists funded by NIH to improve the quality
of the studies they are conducting, KAI has developed a series of guidelines that are available on Institute Web sites.
- Evaluation - KAI designed and performed qualitative and quantitative evaluations of health related
programs to determine if a full scale design could be undertaken and recommend an optimal format.
- Policy Papers - KAI has written position papers posed by Institute staff on topics such as
the definition of a pilot study; individual institution IRBs vs. central IRBs; and disposition of blood and
samples taken from research patients during studies.
- Characterize Scientific Research Portfolio for Management, Control, Reports to Congress - KAI has also
developed mechanisms to characterize large scientific portfolios and provide reports for senior staff and Congress.
KAI can provide expert advice, assistance, guidance or counseling in support of agencies' management,
organizational and business improvement efforts for health research studies. KAI also provides studies,
analyses and reports documenting proposed developmental, consultative or implementation efforts for health research
studies.
